Adventures in Garbage Picking
I was on a walk with my six month-old son when I saw it on a tree lawn: a big, nasty aquarium filled with two inches of murky brown water.
A lot of people on my street put their trash out a day before trash night to let Sandford & Son have their day. I wasn’t sure who would want a filthy aquarium, but then again, I’ve seen pickers take smashed porch swings and yellow-stained fridges.
Something made me look closely at the aquarium for signs of life. And I saw it: a fish flapping his gills! We trotted back (since you can’t run with a baby in a sling) and got my boyfriend. We took the aquarium home and transferred the fish in a clean living environment.
Poor guy. He was living in pure filth. I can’t fathom how someone can throw a living being away–let alone allow his situation to deteriorate that badly.
We actually gave the fish to a neighbor who already owns an aquarium. I hope he’s doing well.
Sometimes I just don’t get people. We’re provided with a beautiful natural world and surrounded by intricate life forms that we domestic, entrap and leave on the curb to die.
I just don’t get it.
