Pack a Waste-Free Lunch
Are you going back to college or sending kids off to school? Do you bring a lunch to work every day? Extend your eco-friendly lifestyle to every lunch you pack.
First off, ditch the brown bags and get a nice vinyl reusable sack or cooler instead. Use reusable containers rather than plastic bags and bring a thermos for drinks. Top it all off with a hefty cloth napkin and your own metal silverware.
Think something as simple as a lunch doesn’t have much of an impact on the environment? Think again.
According to Global Stewards, by the time you read this sentence more than
50,000 12-oz. aluminum cans have been made.
Approximately 25 billion styrofoam cups are thrown away in the U.S. every year and 2 1/2 million plastic bottles are discarded every hour.
Even your orange peels and apple cores aren’t completely safe–it takes a long time for food debris to even partially decompose in a landfill. (It’s better to compost–more on that in a future post.)
Don’t be an anti-environmental statistic–make all your lunches green. Maybe others will catch on.
